Rainy day
Yesterday Anna and I decided to do an impromptu golden hour shoot. One problem; the clouds crashed our party. Now normally if a shoot doesn’t have the conditions I planned on I’ll scrap it, but I’ve been itching to go out and shoot for fun. I threw all planning to the wind and we set out with two cute outfits and a camera.
There wasn’t a lot to work with, but with cloudy skies comes a fun opportunity to work with movement and artificial lighting. Now that I didn’t have to worry about direct light, I could have Anna move in postures and locations that may not have worked originally. There’s nothing like a silhouette on a grey sky.
BACKDROP
The playground near my apartment served as a fun challenge to see what kind of shots I could get on a cluttered, non-aesthetic backdrop. The ropes course on the set was a fun tool to snap some lower view-points and push Anna to find some unusual poses. I liked the contrast between the movement in Anna’s hair and body with the hard lines and solid background.
COLORS
Color was something I was excited to play with in these shots. Since they were more “experimental” I felt I had a little more liberty to mess with the tint and color grading. There were a lot of awesome understated colors in the park that made for fun tweaking on Lightroom.
ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING
Wandering through the alleyways, we spotted a yellow-hued spotlight coming from an apartment building’s basement door. It’s quite literally a blemish to the naked eye, but I wanted to play around and see if we couldn’t make it into a fun prop. My thinking was that I could cool down the color and tint the hues to make it work.
This shoot was mostly just me dicking around with my camera, but I’m really proud of some of the shots that came from it. I haven’t had a “just for fun” shoot like that in a WHILE and it felt so nice to look around my neighborhood through an artistic lens.
